“I made my way to Michelle starting last fall.
If you're like me, you want out of medicine as fast as your feet can carry you--- as soon as you can find something else that suits your interests and abilities, and which will enable you to meet your financial commitments. You don't want to take the first thing that comes along, and then find yourself as unhappy and unfulfilled in the new thing as you were in practice.
But you probably have no firm idea what you'd like to do instead, even if you have a notion of what your skills are, and you're not sure how you can make a living using them. You likely have no idea what's out there for physicians in a non-clinical role; no idea how to present your skills to those who'd employ you; and no idea even who they are. And you probably also need a confidence boost even to consider making a change, after putting in a decade or more becoming a doctor, and years more practicing it every day in the trenches.
Besides these concrete steps, Michelle's greatest help for me has been to give me the sense that I can have a more fulfilling career outside of clinical practice, and still pay my bills and look after my family. It's actually amazing how much there is out there for doctors, but we'd never be able to find it on our own---we've never been trained how to do that, as smart and driven as most of us are.”
